Brighton Photography Highlights from 2018

So it’s that time of year again. A time to reflect on my Brighton photography highlights from 2018, to plan for the year ahead, and to get through the long dark winter evenings with red wine and box sets!

This winter is especially joyous now that we are sharing it with our (almost) two year old daughter. It has been a delight to introduce her to bonfire night and fireworks, which thankfully she loved and still asks about most nights before bed. The brief and light dusting of snow last month was also a source of excitement to her- even thought it was such a small amount that she couldn’t play or sledge in it, but enjoyed licking it instead! And now we have Christmas, and all the joy that brings for kids. She daily hides toys in her stocking, so I can’t wait for her to find new toys in it on Christmas morning.

Being a mum and juggling a business is a very fortunate position to be in, and the late nights I have to dedicate to both ‘jobs’ are well worth it. I’ve met some wonderful couples this year, and feel very lucky indeed to witness and capture the most important events in their lives.

This year was I photographed my first birth! Before having my daughter almost two years ago it didn’t even occur to me to have it captured. But even if I had considered it, like a lot of people I would have been concerned that I’d feel self-consious having a photographer in the room. However, as I now know, there are a number of midwives and people in the room anyway, and you very quickly lose any sense of shyness when you go into labour! You are also so focused on what your body is going through that you tune out a lot of what is going on in the room around you.

As it happened, right at the moment when when my daughter was being born I urged my husband to grab my mobile phone to take a photo of her arrival (which I couldn’t see as I was behind the blue sheet- it was an emergency c-section). This is now one of my favourite ever photos, and in the weeks and months after the birth I found it very therapeutic to look at that photo. It made me feel so much better to look at this photograph, to be able to ‘witness’ her birth.

Capturing the birth was certainly one of my major Brighton photography highlights of the year, and I hope to have the opportunity to capture more births in 2019, so if you are interested in discussing it further please get in touch.
